Once qualified with a Level 3 Mat Pilates Instructor qualification, you’ll be able to teach mat-based Pilates classes in a variety of settings across the UK, including gyms, leisure centres, boutique studios and dedicated Pilates facilities.
You’ll be planning and delivering safe, effective Pilates sessions for individuals and groups, adapting exercises to suit different abilities, and helping clients improve their strength, flexibility, posture and core stability. You’ll also carry out client consultations, screen for health considerations, and design progressive Pilates programmes tailored to your clients’ goals.
The registration period for this qualification is three years, giving you plenty of flexibility to complete your studies around work, family, and other commitments.
The qualification includes 370 hours of Total Qualification Time (TQT), which covers guided learning, independent study, practical preparation, assessments, and other learning activities required to successfully complete the course.
While much of the course can be completed at your own pace, there is also a mandatory 6–12 week class series that forms part of the qualification requirements. This practical component must be completed alongside the required online learning and assessments.
You’ll have up to three years from registration to complete the full qualification, allowing you to progress at a pace that suits your circumstances while continuing to access your learning materials and support.

Yes, the course is:
This guarantees your qualification meets industry standards.
The course is delivered through flexible blended learning. You’ll complete the theory components online using interactive modules, video tutorials, and guided content that you can access anytime and work through at your own pace.
The practical component is taught in person only and cannot be completed virtually. You’ll need to complete the required face-to-face practical sessions as part of the qualification.
You’ll learn the essential knowledge behind how the body moves and functions — including anatomy, physiology and postural alignment — and how to apply this within a Pilates environment. You’ll also develop a strong understanding of core stability, breathing techniques and movement control.
Alongside this, you’ll gain the practical skills to plan and deliver safe, effective mat Pilates sessions, adapt exercises for different abilities, and communicate clearly and confidently with clients. By the end of the course, you’ll be fully prepared to support clients as they improve their strength, flexibility and overall wellbeing.
No prior qualifications or experience are needed to get started. If you have an interest in Pilates, movement and helping others improve their fitness — that’s enough.
Whether you’re completely new to Pilates or already have some experience attending classes, we’ll guide you through everything step-by-step and support you all the way to becoming fully qualified.
Assessment is a mix of online quizzes, written tasks, and a practical observation. You can complete the practical by submitting a video. Your tutor will guide you through every step to make sure you’re confident and fully prepared.
Once you’re qualified, you can work as a Mat Pilates Instructor in gyms, health clubs, leisure centres and Pilates studios throughout the UK. You’ll be delivering mat-based classes, supporting clients with their technique, and helping them improve strength, flexibility and overall wellbeing.
It’s a great starting point for a career in fitness — whether you want to gain experience teaching group exercise or progress further by adding specialist Pilates training or moving into Personal Training with a Level 3 qualification.
You’ll have a dedicated tutor and assessor to guide you through the course, with support available by phone, email, or Zoom. You’ll also get access to our private Facebook community, weekly live Q&A calls, and 24/7 access to your online learning platform — so help is always there when you need it.
As the Level 3 Mat Pilates Instructor is endorsed by Ofqual, Transcend, CIMSPA and ICREPS
You’ll receive the Transcend Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Based Matwork. “Level 3 Mat Pilates Instructor Course” is our programme name — the Diploma is what appears on your certificate, issued by Transcend Awards.
Yes. The qualification number (QAN) is 610/2342/5. You can check it independently on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications: https://find-a-qualification.services.ofqual.gov.uk/qualifications/61023425
Total Qualification Time (TQT): 370 hours
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 150 hours
Directed Study Hours: 220 hours
Credit value: 37 credits
These are set by Transcend Awards and are identical at every approved centre. The 37 credits are spread across six mandatory units.
This is a Diploma. The difference is size, not level: an Award is typically 1–12 credits, a Certificate 13–36, and a Diploma 37 or more. At 37 credits and 370 hours TQT, this is a full Diploma. A Level 3 Award in a Pilates subject would be a short, focused qualification — useful as CPD, but not enough on its own to qualify you as an instructor.
Yes, in full. Every assessment criterion is individually mapped to a specific knowledge or skills requirement within that standard, across all six units. There are no gaps to fill through additional training.
Pilates Based Matwork Instructor Practitioner, carrying the postnominals MCIMSPA. You apply directly to CIMSPA once certificated: https://cimspa.co.uk/membership-products/pilates-based-matwork-practitioner/
CIMSPA only accepts certificates issued by an awarding organisation showing the QAN and Ofqual logo — not certificates issued by a training provider. Yours will be a Transcend certificate carrying 610/2342/5.
To maintain your status you need 10 CPD points a year. The four bonus CIMSPA-endorsed CPD courses included with your enrolment count towards this.
Yes, both. Unit 04 specifically covers instruction for groups and 1-2-1 clients, and CIMSPA’s occupational scope for the role confirms the same. Your scope covers beginner to intermediate clients — technically advanced clients are covered by the Level 4 Certificate in Teaching Advanced Pilates Based Matwork.
You film yourself teaching a complete Pilates class — preparation, main and closing phases, not individual exercises or a partial session. Minimum class length is 45 minutes, delivered to six clients, one of whom must be the individual client you’ve profiled in your portfolio.
The class must be one from a planned 6–12 week progressive series (minimum 12 classes for those six clients), so it sits inside a real teaching block. Your practical is followed by a professional discussion with your assessor.
Yes. This is a competence-based qualification assessed with real clients in a live Pilates environment. You’ll need access to a suitable space (studio, gym, community hall or similar), six clients, exercise mats and small props for alignment.
Access to a live Pilates environment is a Transcend pre-registration requirement, so it needs to be in place before you enrol. Most learners arrange this through a local gym, studio or community venue, or by running a free block of classes for friends, family or colleagues. If you’re not sure whether your setup qualifies, speak to us before enrolling.
A qualified assessor watches and marks your full practical — not self-assessed, peer-reviewed or auto-marked. Transcend requires assessors on this qualification to hold a regulated Level 3 Pilates matwork qualification or equivalent, plus at least two years’ professional experience in a Pilates matwork environment.
Standards are further quality-assured by internal moderation here and external moderation by Transcend’s own EQA team.
Yes. We run an optional live Zoom session with your tutor every week throughout your course, where you can work through exercises you’re finding difficult, get feedback on your class planning, and check your understanding before assessment. Your tutor is also available one-to-one by phone, email or Zoom, with a response within one business day.
We don’t run scheduled in-person workshops or separate supervised practice sessions.
You’ll be told specifically — which cue, in which exercise, and what to do differently — and pointed to the relevant material or shown the correction on a call. If an issue is identified during your final assessment, that component is a fail, you receive detailed written feedback, and you resit.
Yes. You have three assessment attempts for each component, so a single fail doesn’t put your qualification at risk. Theory resits are free. Practical resits are £100 each. You’ll receive detailed feedback before any resit.
No compulsory fees beyond the course price. The only optional charges are practical assessment resits (£100 each) and a course extension if you need longer than your registration period (£100).
Your CIMSPA membership is paid directly to CIMSPA, and you’ll need to cover your own venue and equipment for the practical component.
Your registration period is three years from enrolment, with no fixed deadlines within that.
Total Qualification Time is 370 hours — 150 guided learning hours and 220 hours of directed independent study.
In calendar terms, most learners complete in around three to six months while fitting study around work. How long it takes you depends on your weekly hours and how quickly you can arrange your practical teaching block, since your portfolio requires a 6–12 week class series.
Yes — your access continues after certification, so you can return to the material once you’re teaching.
An Ofqual-regulated Level 3 Diploma issued by an awarding organisation is the standard insurers look for, and CIMSPA professional status alongside it strengthens your position further.
We don’t name specific insurers, as their criteria and pricing are theirs to set and can change. Most will confirm eligibility in a few minutes if you give them the qualification title and number: Transcend Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Based Matwork (QAN 610/2342/5).
Our role is to train and assess you to the standard — we’re an education provider rather than a recruitment service, so finding work is yours to do once qualified.
The qualification does include Unit 06, a full assessed unit on building a Pilates business: strategic direction, client service planning, financial planning including tax and insurance, and marketing. You complete a business plan as assessed work.
Not through this qualification. Transcend’s Pilates progression route is matwork-focused: Level 4 Advanced Pilates Based Matwork, Level 4 Ante and Post Natal, and Level 4 Musculoskeletal Conditions.
Reformer qualifications are offered by other awarding organisations, and generally require a Level 3 matwork qualification as a prerequisite — so this Diploma is the entry route regardless of who you study Reformer with. Hot Pilates isn’t currently a regulated qualification in the UK.
We offer a 30-day refund period. Full terms are in our Refund Policy.
